Squirrel Cuckoo

Piaya cayana

Description

The Squirrel Piaya (*Piaya cayana*) is a fascinating bird of the Neotropical forests, easily recognized by its slender silhouette and disproportionately long tail. Its plumage has a rich cinnamon hue on top, contrasting elegantly with a pearl-gray belly and greenish-yellow beak highlighted by a bright red eye circle. What makes it truly unique is its acrobatic behavior: it darts with surprising agility through the canopy, hopping from branch to branch in a fluid gait strangely reminiscent of a squirrel, earning it its name. A discreet predator of caterpillars and large insects, it also sports large white spots under its graduated tail, offering a striking visual spectacle when it spreads its feathers in full flight.
